Importance of Lubricating Your Garage Door Parts

Importance of Lubricating Your Garage Door Parts

April 18, 2017

Are you the not-so-proud owner of a squeaky garage door? Do you cringe at the sounds your garage door makes each time you open and close it? The bad news is that there are many homeowners across the country who are facing the same squeaky door situation. The good news is that there is an easy solution.

garage door companySince the garage door is one of the biggest moving components in any home, there are several parts and pieces that should be frequently lubricated in order to maintain their health and proper working condition. Once every few months, you should take the time to lubricate the springs, rollers, tracks, hinges, and other moving parts. This will not only help to get rid of and prevent that squeaky noise, but it will also keep everything functioning as it should.

The other detail that is just as important as lubricating your garage door parts on a regular basis is using the right product. The first solution that comes to mind for the vast majority of homeowners is WD-40. However, garage door experts from various sources will agree that WD-40 should not be used on garage door parts. In fact, WD-40 actually strips the oil from the metal garage door components, removing any lubrication that was once present. Instead of lubricating the garage door pieces and helping them to function properly, the squeaking will get louder over time once WD-40 has been applied.

While WD-40 can be used to clean your garage door tracks, it is not a proper lubricant. Instead, a white lithium grease or silicone spray is a much better option for lubricating the moving parts of your garage door.

Once your garage door parts have been properly lubricated with the correct products, you should be able to enjoy a much quieter experience each time your door opens and closes. If the squeaking continues, this could be a sign that something is loose or there is a bigger problem at hand.

If you have been keeping your garage door parts lubricated and the problems persist, it may be time to call a garage door professional to thoroughly check things out.
