Power Out? How to Open Your Garage Door

Power Out? How to Open Your Garage Door

June 8, 2017

A properly functioning garage door is one of those things that you don’t fully appreciate until that convenience is no longer there. But what are you supposed to do when your electric garage door won’t open because the power is out? Are you going to be stuck at home until the power comes back on and you can get your car out?

The good news is that opening your garage door while the power is out is possible, and it’s easy once you know the proper steps to take.

Activate the Bypass
The majority of garage doors are equipped with a bypass function that will allow you to open and close it manually. In order to activate the bypass, look for a rope / string that is hanging down from your system that has a handle on the end of it. It is attached to the motor portion. Now, go ahead and pull down hard on this rope. This will enable you to open the door manually, instead of relying on the automatic system that is currently down.

Now that you have the bypass activated, opening your garage door becomes as easy as lifting it up. If you have never opened your garage door manually before, this can seem a little intimidating at first. However, you need to remember that there were many years where homeowners only had the option of opening and closing their garage doors manually, before automatic systems were implemented. Lifting your garage door is perfectly safe, so go ahead and use those muscles to open the door.

Reattach When Power Comes On
The only other detail you will need to keep in mind is that you have to reattach the garage door to the automatic system once the power returns. For many garage doors, you can simply pull down on the rope again, then pull up on the garage door until it snaps back into place.

Opening your garage door during a power outage is something that most homeowners can handle, but ASSA ABLOY Entrance Systems is here to help if you encounter any problems or bigger issues along the way. Feel free to contact us if you need additional assistance. We have garage door services available 24-hours / day, 7-days / week!
